Asembeka regrets ban will ruin his chances of playing in the World Cup qualifiers

Wazito midfielder Amos Asembeka will aim to pick from where he left when the government lifts the ban on sporting activities.

Asembeka had won coach Francis Kimanzi faith in the last two matches before the March 25 Presidential decree which saw sportsmen down their tools and revert to individual training.

The creative midfielder who joined Wazito in March 2019 from Tusker had seen limited playing time from the time the former Harambee Stars boss arrived at the club in November last year.

His patience paid off after Kimanzi handed him his first start of the season during their 2-1 win over South Sudan in friendly match staged at the Kasarani Annex and would keep the slot in the subsequent 2-2 draw with Bandari.

The 26-year old however suffered a major blow in his bid to cement a place in the first team after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered for the temporal suspension of sporting activities.

Despite the setback, Asembeka who is currently keeping fit by himself hopes that he will pick from where he left when the coronavirus containment measures are reviewed and sportsmen allowed to go back to the pitch.

"The break came at a time when I was picking up well. I had managed to convince the coach that I was good enough to play in the first team but all is not lost. I am working hard on my own to maintain my shape and hopefully when we resume, I will be fit enough to retain my place in the team, " he said.

The former Sony Sugar man also regretted that the ban ruined his chances of returning to the national team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

Former Stars head coach Stanley Okumbi handed handed the former Tusker player his maiden Stars call up in 2017 for the Dr Congo and Uganda friendly matches.

Kenya is placed in pool E of the qualifiers set to kick off in June alongside neighbors Uganda, Rwanda and Mali.

"I had a plan to capitalize on playing time at club level to win the confidence of the national team technical bench. It is unfortunate, that did not come to pass due to the break," he rued.
