The EFL Championship club claims the money based on the 'expected goals' (?!) and states that "it would have guaranteed them about 10 goals to avoid relegation"
Despicable and inexplicable. That's the most precise way to describe the legal action the EFL Championship side Cardiff City took against the Ligue 1 club Nantes, demanding €110 million for the financial loss in the case of Emiliano Sala's death.
Cardiff were set to sign striker Sala, 28, from Nantes in January 2019. However, the striker was killed in a plane crash on his way to completing the deal. Now, Cardiff have confirmed they will seek damages from Nantes in the French courts.
"This is not a surprise and the club has already prepared separate legal action against them, which will be started straight away."
Cardiff maintain that 'FC Nantes must be held responsible for the accident', which they allege was 'organised by their agent'.
"This will be to recover what the club paid for Emiliano and additional damages for further consequential losses," Cardiff added.
FIFA originally imposed a three-window transfer embargo on Cardiff after their failure to pay the initial instalment of the Sala fee. The embargo was lifted after Cardiff paid the first instalment in January.
According to L'Equipe, in March, the Malaysian owner of the Welsh club, Vincent Tan said:
"We could never use the very promising player we had bought ," continued Tan. "Emiliano Sala could have scored the few goals that would have saved us from relegation (Cardiff finished 18th in the Premier League at the end of the 2018-2019 season, getting relegated to the EFL Championship). This resulted in a loss of 115 M€ , at least, for the club. With Sala, we could have avoided relegation. He didn't play a single game for us. Why should we pay for his entire transfer? FC Nantes must be punished."
Wow, just wow...
