It’s like the David Alaba story is repeating itself — Bayern can’t meet the demands of their player, but the Madrid club is ready to pay and secure him
Dayot Upamecano is emerging as a growing headache for Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid is ready to capitalize. The Bavarians are eager to secure the French defender’s future, with his contract set to expire in 2026. What was meant to be a swift extension has stalled, with negotiations on ice for more than half a year.
The sticking point? Money. Upamecano reportedly earns around €16 million annually but is asking for more. With talks at a standstill, Real Madrid is reportedly making its move, offering the prospect of a free transfer in 2026, according to SPORT BILD.

Bayern are all too familiar with this scenario. In 2021, they failed to meet David Alaba’s salary demands. Real swooped in, paid a hefty signing bonus, and brought Alaba to Madrid without a transfer fee. Interestingly, Alaba’s contract there also runs until 2026.
Upamecano could follow in his footsteps, stepping directly into a similar role. Antonio Rudiger, who arrived from Chelsea on a free transfer in 2022, also has a contract expiring that same summer, adding further incentive for Madrid.
Bayern now face a crowded field of suitors. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United are also reportedly monitoring Upamecano.
If the record champions cannot meet his demands, the Frenchman risks becoming the latest Bayern star to leave on a free transfer, potentially joining Europe’s elite clubs just like Alaba and Rudiger before him.
