The club has signed six new players
Kisumu Lakers Hockey finished third in the 2022 Kenya Hockey Union Women’s Premier League, improving on their previous performance by one step.
Ahead of the new season set for April, the Kisumu-based side have been shopping for fresh talent to bolster their squad and have so far netted six.
The new recruits are fished mainly from Universities and Colleges around Kisumu.
They include Sheila Musanga, Verah Anyango, Dorothy Achieng, Ruth Netia, Synthia Adhiambo and Mary Anne Mercy.
According to the Team Manager John Paul Otieno, the players may have their preferred positions, but they will be trained depending on their strengths after critical evaluation.
"We can't talk about their positions right now because we always train our new players for particular positions, but most of them are midfielders and defenders," Otieno told Mozzart Sport.
Lakers, the only Women’s Premier League side from the entire Western Region, are still scouting for more talent.
"We are still scouting for more players. If we can get in time before the transfer window officially shuts, we shall register them even as late registrations, but if it's not possible, then we will wait for the next transfer window to open," Otieno added.
The KHU national leagues for the 2023 season were to kick-off this weekend, however, a Masters tournament will instead be taking place in Kisumu, meaning league action will not start.
Lakers will begin their season on Saturday, 29 April 2023 with a clash against defending champions Strathmore University at City Park, Nairobi.
A day later, the team face newbies Kenyatta University Ladies at the same venue.
