
Commonwealth Games: Final Kenya contingent set for Tuesday departure

Team Kenya has a broad representation of sports disciplines, including para sports in its 17-strong sports disciplines.
In a clear sign that the country is prepared for a better championship at this year’s Commonwealth Games set for 28 July to 8 August in Birmingham, England, the final Kenya contingent leaves the country on Tuesday 26 July.

Kenya has already sent over 100 of its more than 140 athletes scheduled to take part in the Games, just four days away from its official opening on 28 July.
Kenya has competitors in women’s hockey, lawn bowls, triathlon, judo, wheelchair basketball, 3x3 basketball, boxing, table tennis, badminton, wrestling, swimming, beach volleyball, para-athletics, athletics, para-powerlifting, cycling, para-cycling and rugby.

The delegation to Birmingham commenced with the advance lean team of the Chef de Mission John Ogolla and the CEO Humphrey Kayange accompanied by five members of the Para athletics team on July 17.
This kicked off a phased departure process guided by various considerations that provided the team with the most efficient travel against their schedule of competitions.
“We are excited to receive our teams streaming into the various village camps of the Games. Team Kenya will be staying in three villages; Birmingham University, Warwick and NEC Hilton Hotel. All have had good travel despite the huge numbers arriving from various parts of the Commonwealth. The logistical plans we put in place have worked very well so far,” Ogolla offered.

He continued, “The athletes have settled down well after receiving their accreditation and are eager to perform exceptionally well during these global Games.”
Most of the teams already booked their training venues through the Training Booking System of the Games and are beginning to have a feel with very positive feedback. The Government has fully sponsored the Team’s preparation and participation and is looking forward to exceptional results by the close of the Games.
