Celebrated Kenyan volleyball coach, Catherine Mabwi, has been appointed as a member of the prestigious FIVB Coaches Commission.

The Junior (U-20) Malkia Strikers assistant coach is part of a global team dedicated to shaping the future of volleyball coaching.

The FIVB Coaches Commission consists of 12 highly esteemed members from across the world, representing different volleyball confederations. She is the sole African representative in a list that has legendary volleyball figures led by Giovanni Guidetti, the Serbia women's national team coach, who will serve as the president.

Others in the list include American Karch Kiraly, the first volleyball player to win three Olympic gold medals and was considered one of the sport’s greatest players, excelling at both indoor and beach volleyball.

Mabwi will also work alongside the legendary Zé Roberto (Jose Roberto Guimarães) who holds the unique distinction of being the only coach in volleyball history to win Olympic gold medals with both men's and women's teams, a feat achieved with Brazil in 1992 (Men) and women (2008, 2012).

"Mabwi's inclusion is a testament to her commitment and success in advancing volleyball coaching in Africa. Her involvement in this elite commission will further amplify the global recognition of African volleyball talent and contribute to developing coaching standards worldwide," a statement by Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) on the appointment reads.

Canadian head coach who has also been at the helm of Australian volleyball previously Shannon Winzer will serve the commission as the Secretary, bringing her vast experience to the development of the sport.

Volleyball hall of famer Nikola Grbic is also on the Commission. Currently serving as head coach for the Poland national team, Grbić is a gold medalist of the 2000 Summer Olympics, a bronze medalist of the 1996 Summer Olympics, and a multiple World Championship, European Championship, and World League medalist.

This is a new high for Mabwi who went down history books in 2020 as both the only Kenyan and first woman from Africa to attain the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) instructor rank.

The FIVB Commissions and Councils play a key role in advising the FIVB across several key areas, including coaching, legal and medical among many others.
