
Laureus Sports Awards looming for Kenya's Boxgirls

The ‘Laureus Sport for Good Award’ honours social initiatives that have significantly improved the lives of children and adolescents through sport.
As the 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards get underway in Paris, France on Monday 8 May, Kenyan community-based organization Boxgirls stands a chance to bag a global award in the Sports for Good award category.
Boxgirls are nominated alongside TeamUp (Netherlands), Slum Soccer (India) and the Made For More program, whose goal is to make sport accessible to South Africans with disabilities for the gong.

The Nairobi-based organization runs a program that engages girls and young women across poor and disenfranchised neighbourhoods in Nairobi. Currently, the organization is impacting the lives of girls from Kariobangi, Huruma, Mathare, Korogocho, Kayole, Kariadudu, Babadogo and Western region in Ekambuli.
An organization established over a decade ago on the back of the work of Anjalo Anjere, popularly known as priest, its main focus is on imparting boxing skills on young boys and girls from Kariobangi as well as surrounding areas.
Besides imparting boxing skills to the hundreds of youth who pass through this initiative, Boxgirls’ other programs also include leadership and mentorship; monitoring and evaluation; and Dada Cash, an economic empowerment initiative.
The ‘Laureus Sport for Good Award’ honours social initiatives that have significantly improved the lives of children and adolescents through sport.
There are 19 Olympians among the nominees across several award categories includes multiple gold-medal winners, Mikaela Shiffrin, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Rafael Nadal.
Lionel Messi, who helped Argentina win the World Cup, Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors, who won the NBA title for the fourth time in eight years, Katie Ledecky who set a record for world titles in the pool is also featured in the nominations.
