Mandonga now has back to back wins in Nairobi and a belt to go with it
Tanzanian popular boxer Karim Mtu Kazi Mandonga can now stand up and flex his muscles with a title belt around his waist!
This is after the loud and confident 43 year old marked another win in Nairobi by downing his Ugandan opponent of the day - Kenneth Lukyamuzi- by a judges' split decision to lift his first ever title- the Pugilist Syndicate of Tanzania Light Heavyweight Title.
The decision came after one judge had scored the fight even, with the other two judges scoring the eight rounds bout in favour of the Tanzanian to hand him his first title in the boxing scene.
Mandonga, who made his boxing debut on July 26 2015, had not laid in hands on any boxing title and early Sunday morning at the fairly attended Kasarani Gymnasium proved to be the day and the place to do just that.
"I want to thank God, the people of Kenya, the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission, all Tanzanians and Karim Mandonga himself for this big victory, " Mtu Kazi said immediately after his fight in the ring - with his gold coated PST Light Heavyweight Title belt hung around his shoulder. "I promised that I'll be back in Kenya and I am here, with another win."
The last time Mandonga was in Nairobi was on January 14 - when he went on to beat Kenyan opponent Daniel Wanyonyi via Technical Knock-out - and it was clear in his post-fight interview that he for sure needed a go at him once again.
"Daniel Wanyonyi! Daniel Wanyonyi! Leo umepewa mzee wewe (You fought an old man today - referencing Ugandan Charles Kakande)," Mandonga said. "Mimi nina kazi na wewe! Nitarudi Nairobi kushughulikia wewe! Nimesikia unachochi sana. (I will be back in Nairobi because I have a job and that's to deal with you. I have heard you hyping yourself up)."
The warning was sounded to Wanyonyi after the Kenyan and former middleweight champion had dismantled Ugandan Charles Kakande in the fourth bout of the night in convincing fashion (first round knock out) and left some huge words for Mandonga to contemplate on.
"Bring him now [Mandonga]," an upbeat Wanyonyi said after his win. "Today was just a warmup, showing him what I will do to him. Let him not think that the first time was the real me. This is now who I am, you can actually bring him to the ring now."
It was clear that the growing rivalry was just getting started but on the night - one which was beamed live all over East Africa's DStv Maisha Magic channels - Karim Mandonga was the man on the top seat, and with his highest accolade in his 'fun' boxing career.
