JKUAT women are still chasing a first victory after three matches.

Ulinzi Sharks head coach Emmanuel Kieti is confident the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) women's league side has what it takes to win the league.

The soldiers who finished second in the regular league last season and in the pre-season Super Cup tournament, losing to Nairobi Water Queens on both occasions opened their 2022 season this weekend.

Kieti guided the side to a comfortable 31-12 victory against varsity side Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in a match that Sarah Wasike and Sharon Chelule top scored at six goals.

"We started the season on a positive note and I am happy with the performance. The win against JKUAT gives us confidence that our pre-season preparations have been good. I have a good squad with very good player and I believe we will win this league," offered Kieti.

The soldiers, however, have their work cut out as stiff competition is expected from holders Nairobi Water and National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) among others.

The Jack Ochieng-led defending champions opened their season with victory against JKUAT in a 36-16 outcome on the opening weekend before humiliating newbies Nairobi City County (NCC) 53-9 on Sunday 19 June.

In Sunday's match, the holders went all out in a scoring spree with Brenda Musambai and Millicent Nyongesa top scoring at eight and seven goals respectively.

NCC were no match for the star-studded Nairobi Water and all the players but for the shot-stoppers managed to bag at least a goal in the victory.

As for NCPB who, last season fell behind the holders and the soldiers, their start to the season has also been decent, picking a win against JKUAT in the opening weekend in a 29-12 scoreline and a 35-5 win over Amazon this weekend.

Despite losing all their matches so far, JKUAT women's head coach Kevin Mwangi believes they have handed the tougher opponents and that has given them a chance to regroup for the more manageable matches which he says they will win.
