Tough match-ups as Kenya Volleyball League returns

Reading Time: 3min | Tue. 14.05.24. | 14:50

GSU men are looking to extend their unbeaten run as they look to reclaim the title won by Prisons last season

After over a month’s break, paving the way for national team assignments, the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) leagues return on Thursday 16 to19 May for the fourth leg.

Matches will be played at Kasarani, Nyayo, and Ulinzi Complex gymnasiums.

Players will be out to pick crucial points that will guide their respective sides to qualify for the KVF National League playoffs.

This season’s play format has been altered, introducing a playoff after the regular season instead of the round-robin format previously used. The top eight teams, as opposed to four in previous editions, advance to the knockout stages.

In the men’s league, former champions General Service Unit (GSU) hope to continue their unbeaten run when they take on Administration Police (AP), Western Prisons, Kenya Forest Services (KFS) and Prisons Kenya across the four days.

As they go to battle without the services of head coach Gideon Tarus who is away on other assignments, middle blocker Shadrack Misiko says they will be pushing to maintain their unbeaten run as they aim to head to the playoffs with a good run.

“The ambition is to remain unbeaten and we have worked on our game to be ready for the fourth leg. The entire squad is focused. In the absence of Tarus, we are more motivated to do it for him,” Misiko told Mozzart Sport ahead of the matches.

Misiko says all four matches carry the same weight, calling on the team not to be complacent as they need all the points on offer. The side will hope to put their Pipeline @50 semis exit behind them for a weekend of wins.

A lot of attention, however, will be on the side’s final day fixture where they face league champions and African bronze medalists Prisons Kenya who denied them a record-extending seventh title.

“We have put that behind us and are out to fight for victory in that match just as the others,” Misiko added.
