The team is currently preparing for Tisap 7s set to be held at the Eldoret Sports Club over the weekend

Daystar Falcons have risen to be a force to be reckoned with in the 7s version of the game. The side secured their maiden quarterfinal appearance in last year’s Kabeberi 7s but bowed out in the fifth-place playoff after a 34-7 loss to Homeboyz RFC.

It was in that tournament that debutant Patrick Odongo shone and managed to be the top try scorer after playing all five games. That was also their first quarterfinal tie since 2013.

Despite this year’s circuit being arguably one of the most competitive ones in history, the Falcons have showcased resilience, holding their spirit against multiple Kenya Cup teams. For instance, In Christie 7s, the Falcons surprised hosts Kenya Harlequins 15-12 in the opening pool match.

They have not managed a quarterfinal appearance in any of the last legs.

They finished 12th in the lakeside tournament, picking five points. Their not-so-good performance continued in Driftwood where they bagged another five points. They picked seven points in Nakuru, before adding five more points in the Ngong Road-based tournament. They currently sit 11th on the log with 22 points after four rounds.

According to Falcons’ coach Caleb Bosire, the boys have been putting their best foot forward regardless of the competitiveness of the circuit.

“Our consistency is due to hard work, effort and belief among the squad,” Bosire offered.

The former Falcons’ backrower also noted that the students were fine tuning various facets of their play in readiness for Tisap 7s that will be played at the Eldoret Sports Club from September 2-3.

“As a team we strive to perform and play to our level best. We always aim for continuous growth and improvement. Our training has been good with our key area of focus being defence. We have also worked on areas of our game that let us down at the Christie 7s,” he pointed out.The coach was aware that while standout players had a big impact on the team’s success, a team that worked well together could accomplish far more. He insisted on teamwork and not individual brilliance within the team come Tisap 7s.

“Rugby is a team sport and it's very tough to single out a single player as a standout. There are always instances of individual brilliance, but we always say that everyone's effort is important. If everyone is doing their job then as a team we are all standouts,” he revealed.

Bosire also lauded his charges’ consistent thirst for improvement, emphasising that their current achievements are stepping stones on the way to victory.

“The boys have played really well this season and we aim to build on that at Tisap 7s. We always take it one game at a time at every tournament. In the circuit every team is competitive and there are no pushovers. We always tackle each game with the same mentality,” he explained.

Falcons have been placed in a tricky Pool C that see them tackle National Sevens Circuit heavyweights Kabras, Quins and Kisumu.

During the World Rugby U20 Trophy held at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, the Falcons fed the national team with five incredible talents; Geylord Ngasi, Eddy Wambugu, Wicklife Ogutu, Nathan Tsindoli and Mike Oduor.
