This will be the first leg of the 2023 National 7s circuit.

Rugby enthusiasts are gearing up for an electrifying opening leg of the National 7s circuit, the prestigious Dala 7s set to be hosted by Kenya Cup side Kisumu RFC.

The event will make a grand return to the prestigious Jomo Kenyatta Stadium from 1 to 2 July in what will be an absolute feast for the senses.

In an exclusive with Mozzart Sport, Kisumu RFC coach Lawi Buyachi said that they were finalizing preparations to captivate the senses of fans and awe them in the beauty of the game.

What makes the tournament even more magical is that fans will enjoy matches under the glow of floodlights.

“This is the first circuit that will happen under the floodlights so it is very special and all the teams have confirmed participation,” coach Buyachi offered.

Dala 7s was set to be the second leg of the 2023 National 7s circuit after the inaugural edition of Tisap 7s set for Eldoret on 24 and 25 July, but it was postponed to pave way for the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally. Despite that, the gaffer is confident that all is set for a memorable 2023 Dala 7s.

“I think for Kisumu Rugby fraternity we are excited and we want to promise our fans an incredible experience. Being a season opener, we have struggled here and there but things are looking good now, and we can say we are ready to host Dala 7s,” the former South Coast Pirates coach said.

The tactician also reflected on the team’s steady growth, noting that since they gained promotion to the top tier, they have caught the eyes of investors.

Kisumu RFC was promoted to the Kenya Cup side after defeating Daystar University Falcons 19-7 in a Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship semifinal match played at the Strathmore University grounds on 4 March.

“From where we were before and now, we want to showcase what we can do. When we gained promotion to Kenya Cup there was a lot of interest. We have more bargaining power now. All I can say is mambo iko sawa (loosely translated to ‘things are good’),” Buyachi told Mozzart Sport.

The 2022 Dala 7s edition saw Homeboyz beat Menengai Oilers 19-14 to reclaim the Dala 7s title in a final at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium on Sunday 3 June 2022.

The Deejayz became the fourth different champion in the season's sevens campaign. They joined KCB Rugby who won Kabeberi 7s, Strathmore Leos (Christie’s 7s), and Mwamba (Driftwood 7s).

Menengai Oilers ran away with the Prinsloo 7s title while Kabras RFC carried Kakamega 7s glory. The Oilers were crowned the 2022 National 7s circuit winners.
