Kabras RFC speedster Lameck Ambetsa is enjoying the sweet smell of success after bagging the Prinsloo 7s Most Valuable Player at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Sunday 6 August, 2023.
Ambetsa was key in the Sugarmen’s impressive performance. Kabras RFC won their maiden Prinsloo 7s title after defeating Kenya Harlequins 10-5 in the closely contested finals. To qualify for the finals stage, the Sugarmen had seen off Homeboyz RFC (21-19), Western Bulls (31-7), and Kisumu RFC (24-12) in the pool stage.
At the quarterfinal stage, Felix Ayange’s charges edged Nakuru RFC 22-5 before defeating KCB Rugby 15-0 in the semifinals. They would then nail determined Kenya Harlequins 10-5 at the final stage to win the title that was previously held by Menengai Oilers.
Reflecting on the successful outing, the Bungoma High School alumni said that teamwork gave the Sugarmen a perfect run in Nakuru. He also credited their run to solid training sessions.
“Teamwork. It was not individual brilliance but teamwork. The hardwork we have put in training, and setting our minds that matches would not be easy. We had a strong mindset towards each game, and took it seriously. We trusted each other and knew that no team was to be underrated,” he observed.
Ambetsa debuted for the Sugarmen in their 42-0 Kenya Cup win over Nakuru RFC in May this year. Roped in from MMUST RFC in the January transfer window, Ambetsa was among the four new signings to cross borders from MMUST to Kabras in the 2023 January window. The others were Biden Hayo, Gibson Perez, and Felix Bukhutse.
The speedster acknowledged that his maiden MVP award was motivating, and a strong show of his efforts finally paying off.
“I feel good. The efforts are finally paying off. This is my first MVP award and I will ensure to deliver more,” he said.
Going forward, the winger aims at sharpening his individual skills to enable him perform best in not only the national, but also international levels too.
He has set his gaze at helping Kenya 7s national team; Shujaa qualify for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. Shujaa will be competing alongside fellow African countries like Algeria, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Zambia, Namibia, Tunisia, and Cote d’Ivoire.
“I will improve on my personal skills, and see how to implement them on the game. I should have the trust and courage to do things. I want to be part of the Kenya 7s team, the training and playing team. I really believe it can happen. I believe God, myself, and my coaches. If I sharpen my skills and do my best, anything can happen,” Ambetsa assured.
Kabras RFC have been placed in Pool A of Christie 7s. They will be up against Nakuru RFC, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, and Impala RFC. They will be keen to cause upset. They currently top the table with 63 points.
