Veteran made his first appearance of the season for Kulabu in matchday 5 and it came with a precious first victory.

Rugby veteran Collins Injera has made a personal vow to work extra time all in a mission to save one time Kenya Cup champions Mwamba RFC from facing the threat of relegation in the 2021/2022 rugby campaign.

Over the past weekend, the seasoned Kenyan international made his first appearance of the season for Kulabu and his return to the side coincided with Mwamba getting their first win of the campaign as the Kelvin Wambua coached side defeated Blak Blad 10-28 in matchday 5.

Having then managed to end their four match losing streak since the start of the season with that victory, the 1983 Kenya Cup winners moved out of the automatic relegation places for the first time this season as they went upto ninth on the log on 5 points.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport after guiding his team to the maiden victory, Injera revealed that he has taken the task upon himself and has committed to see the club move out of the relegation battle with the hope that his experience and that of other seniors in the team will bail out the club from their early season struggles.

“It felt good getting back to the grind and I am really glad we managed to start off the year with a win because we really needed one. One thing that we have talked about as the senior group is that we need to give the young guys a platform to keep on moving. It is not good to just leave the team for them. Even for us, when we came in we had people we were learning from. So that is why we have to come back and just make sure there are people they learn from and also give them a stepping stone for them to further their careers as well,” the player remarked.

Additionally, the Shujaa all-time top try scoring wizard committed that he will be with the team till the end of the season to help as much as possible.

“I have committed to be there all through till the end of the season. For me it is about playing the sport that I love and it does not matter how old you are so long as I put in the shift,” Injera noted.

The Kenyan international however called on his team to step up their training if they are to avoid being one of the two teams that will be relegated at the end of the season.

“We have to gel well. One thing we have struggled with is numbers in training because most of the times you find there is no consistency in training with people failing to show up regularly as we are not a fully professional side. That is where we are struggling at the moment because we cannot implement them in games,” the player concluded.

Mwamba will take on Top Fry Nakuru this weeking hoping to build on their first win of the season.
