Kulabu ladies won the inaugural women Kenya Cup on Saturday.

After etching their name in the country’s rugby folklore, Mwamba Ladies RFC head coach Joseph Baabu was ecstatic to make history by becoming the first side to win the tournament.

Mwamba pulled an upset to edge Yamanashi Impala Saracens 11-15 in the Women Kenya Cup final staged on Saturday at the Impala Club.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Baabu admitted that the Impala handed them a run for their money in the final but was glad to have made history in the game.

“History has been done, the game was not easy Impala gave us a very challenging game because they were the best team and the team to beat.

They had a lot of injuries compared to us, we had three injuries and they had six and most of their injuries were on National Team players which worked to our advantage,” said Baabu.

Terry Ayesa and Janet Okello’s brace of tries handed Mwamba the narrow win over Impala who went through the regular season unbeaten after brushing aside teams.

Baabu opened up on how the victory was important for his side after dishing out a walkover in the regular season after failing to raise a quorum for the game.

“It was very important to get victory in the game because we gave a walkover in the regular season as our players were in international duties with their respective teams and other players had exams.

We needed to make a statement and make Mwamba the first Kenyan ladies team to win the Kenya Cup because we were the first ones to win 7’s and 10’s tournaments in the country,” added Baabu.
