The Kenya 7s National team, Shujaa, is in Munich, Germany for the HSBC Challenger Series
Shujaa assistant captain Tony Omondi has backed the team to register good results in the upcoming final leg of the World Rugby HSBC Challenger Series slated for May 18-19 in Dantestadion, Munich, Germany.
The team has been in good form since the Challenger Series kicked off in January. They won the first leg in Dubai after edging Chile 12-5 before coming in third in Montevideo after defeating Chile 31-12 in the third-place playoff.
The performance sees them sit second on the table. They will be hoping to continue with the fine run and win this final leg.
If they perform well in Munich, they will make the top four and secure their spot in the final playoff-cum World 7s promotion in Madrid in June.
Speaking ahead of their match, Omondi noted that they would be counting on their intense preparation to propel them to success. Despite the challenges involved in getting to Munich, Omondi was confident that the team would deliver.
“The preparations went well even though getting here was a bit hectic for us but I believe the boys are ready and we are well prepared for the tournament,” he offered.
The side which will be under the close tutelage of Coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua and his assistant Louis Khisia have been placed in Pool C together with Chile, Portugal, and Japan.
“The ambition is to finish in the top four at the end of Sunday. That is what we are going for as a team but each game to us is a final and we hope to get there eventually. The results will take care of themselves,” Omondi averred.
He further called on the Kenyan fans to rally behind the team, noting that their support kept them moving. He was confident of Shujaa’s chances in the HSBC World Rugby 7s series. The matches will be live on Rugby Pass TV.
“I urge all the Kenyans around the world to keep supporting us. This is the start of a big thing and hopefully you will be there with us when we get back to the series,” he urged.
Shujaa will start their campaign with a match against Japan on Saturday at 12:22 pm before locking horns with Portugal at 3:04 pm. They will end the competition with a match against Chile at 5:46 pm.
