Barca's loss could be Chelsea's gain: Blues eye Catalans' vice-captain

The London side is allegedly interested in the defender and could make a move if Barcelona's financial struggles continue

Even though Barcelona's financial situation is slightly better than at the beginning of the year, when they barely registered Dani Olmo and Pau Victor for the second half of the season, it's still far from ideal. Hence, Barca may be forced to sell, and some sides could profit from it. Chelsea, before any other.

Namely, according to Football Insider, the Blues are keen on the Catalans' vice-captain, Ronald Araujo, and could move for the Urugayan if Barca's financial struggles continue.

Enzo Maresca has had serious problems with sidelined centre-backs, as Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, and Benoit Badiashile have all had injury issues, while Levi Colwill won't return before April due to his ACL tear.Hence, Chelsea could use a reinforcement in the back line and Barcelona could use money - not less than €35 million, which is the defender's value according to Transfermarkt.

The fact that Araujo was recently on the Camp Nou exit door could increase the London side's chances. Namely, the 26-year-old wasn't satisfied with his playing time and was on the verge of joining Juventus last January, but eventually turned down the offer and extended his deal with the Catalans until 2031.

Back then, the media reported that, apart from Barca's management led by the sporting director Deco, Robert Lewandowski played a pivotal role in Araujo's stay, as he convinced him to change his mind after the Blaugrana's triumph over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

If the rumours about the potential cooperation between Barcelona and Chelsea are true, Araujo may again need some persuasion, but this time, not to stay, but to leave.
