The Hornets are slowly climbing up the table after a turbulent start to the season, while the Robins will be desperate to bounce back from back-to-back defeats that have dented their playoff hopes.

After a mixed start to the 2025/26 Championship season, Watford have shown signs of improvement under their new coach, Javi Gracia.

The Hornets currently sit 12th on the table with 19 points from 14 matches, just three points off the top six, and they come into this game unbeaten in their last two outings.

Their recent 3–0 win over Middlesbrough and a 1–1 draw away to Ipswich Town have injected renewed confidence into a side that struggled for consistency earlier in the campaign.

Watford’s recent form at Vicarage Road has been excellent - winning each of their last four home league games and collecting 16 of their 19 total points on home soil.

The Hornets have also scored at least two goals in each of their last three matches at home, making them one of the most dangerous attacking sides in front of their fans.

A win on Friday would push them closer to the playoff places and mark a fifth straight home league victory.

Bristol City, meanwhile, have hit a stumbling block after what was a promising start to the season.

The Robins had gone on a strong run of three consecutive wins, including victories over Birmingham, Southampton, and Norwich, but their form has dipped sharply in recent weeks.

Gerhard Struber’s men suffered a heavy 5–1 defeat away to Stoke City before being edged 1–0 by Blackburn Rovers at Ashton Gate - a match in which they failed to register a single shot on target.

That run has seen them drop to 7th in the standings with 22 points, just outside the playoff spots.

Despite that, Bristol City have shown resilience on their travels this season, boasting one of the Championship’s better away records with three wins and a draw from seven away fixtures.

However, with a lengthy injury list and form faltering, this trip to Watford comes at a difficult moment for the visitors.

Watford will again be without Giorgi Chakvetadze, who has not featured since April, while Rocco Vata faces an extended spell out with a hamstring injury.

Caleb Wiley is nearing a return but remains unlikely to feature in this fixture.

Defensively, James Abankwah is expected to retain his place alongside Mattie Pollock, while captain Imran Louza will continue to lead from midfield after scoring six goals in his last eight matches, making him the Hornets’ top scorer and creative heartbeat.

For Bristol City, the situation is more concerning.

The Robins’ injury list is one of the longest in the league, now stretching to ten players after Mark Sykes suffered a severe shin injury and Neto Borges was forced off in midweek.

Other absentees include Luke McNally, Cameron Pring, Harry Cornick, Jason Knight, Max Bird, Joe Williams, Josh Stokes, and Rob Atkinson.

This leaves Gerhard Struber with limited options and the likelihood of calling up youth players to fill the bench.

With key players missing and others operating out of position, Bristol City’s squad depth will be tested against a Watford side that looks rejuvenated at home.

Watford under Gracia have shown a more balanced structure, alternating between a 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 setup depending on the phase of play.

Louza’s leadership and versatility have allowed the Hornets to build patiently from midfield while maintaining a threat in wide areas. Their full-backs have been key in stretching the pitch, with overlapping runs providing width and supply for the forwards.

Bristol City’s tactical approach, on the other hand, has been hampered by injuries.

Normally structured in a 4-2-3-1, the Robins rely heavily on attacking midfielder Anis Mehmeti and winger Scott Twine, both of whom have contributed five goals each this season.

However, the loss of several key players has affected their ability to sustain possession and transition effectively - an issue that Watford could look to exploit through aggressive pressing and quick transitions.

Watford have historically enjoyed the upper hand in this fixture, particularly at home.

The Hornets have won four of their last five home matches against Bristol City, and their overall record at Vicarage Road makes them clear favourites heading into this clash.

Key Pointers

- Watford have the best home record in this season's Championship

- Bristol City have lost their last two league fixtures

- Only the Championship leaders, Coventry City, have beaten Watford in their last four league games

- Watford are bidding to win a fifth successive home league match

- Watford have won four of their last five home games against Bristol City

Watford’s recent upturn in form, combined with their formidable home record, makes them favourites to claim all three points on Friday night.

Bristol City’s injury crisis and loss of momentum further tilt the odds in the Hornets’ favour.

The Robins have shown attacking potential this season, but with multiple absentees and a shaky defense, it is difficult to see them containing a Watford side that has been relentless at home.

Expect the hosts to control possession, create chances through Louza’s creativity, and take advantage of Bristol City’s defensive frailties.

Watford’s resurgence under Javi Gracia continues to gather momentum, and with confidence high and home form on their side, the Hornets look well-placed to make it five straight home wins.

Bristol City’s depleted squad faces a difficult test, and unless they rediscover their early-season sharpness, another setback seems likely.

Prediction: Watford to Win/Over 1.5 Goals
