It's a matter of hours now as the 21-year-old full-back is about to sign for Tottenham to seal their splendid transfer window
Years have passed since some second-tier player used to attract such attention and suspense regarding his future like Djed Spence.
The young Middlesborough right-back, until recently on loan at Nottingham Forest, has been one of the top targets of several Premier League clubs, but it seems his arrival is expected in North London.
A few highly respected British journalists claim Spence will become a new Spurs' player after he undergoes a medical.
Negotiations between Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, his Middlesbrough counterpart Steve Gibson and the player's representative Scott Smith are believed to have produced a breakthrough and the transfer is on the cusp of being done.
Spurs head coach Antonio Conte, meanwhile, refused to be drawn on the deal for Spence when in South Korea on Friday.
"Yeah, about Spence we don't want to comment about speculation because it is disrespectful for all the other players, for the club and the other team," Conte said.
"Sure, we are always looking to improve the squad if there is the possibility."
Spence began his career in Fulham's academy but moved to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2018. He won the EFL Young Player of the Month in January 2020.
The defender made 63 appearances for the northeast side before moving on loan to Nottingham Forest last summer.

He made 39 appearances for Forest last season, starring under head coach Steve Cooper as they reached the play-off final and won promotion to the Premier League.
Spence would be Spurs' sixth signing, following Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet.
