According to reliable sources, the federation is preparing to augment the quota to allow clubs to register up to seven foreign players per team and field a maximum of five in a match.

The current rule, introduced in 2020, permits each top-tier club to register five foreign players, with only three allowed on the pitch at any given time.

Plans are in motion to increase the foreign player quota to seven registered and five allowed on the field,” a source close to the federation told Mozzart Sport.

The proposal is aimed at improving the league’s competitiveness, commercial appeal, and international standing, with inspiration drawn from football powerhouses such as Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco.

This will strengthen the league’s quality, boost its commercial value, and enhance CAF competitiveness while giving our players increased exposure,” the source added.

Currently, Tanzania allows eight foreign players, while Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco permit five each, with Morocco adding provisions for more depending on club requirements.

The FKF had previously adopted strict measures to control the influx of foreign players, citing concerns over the quality of imports compared to local talent.

At the time, there were proposals to set high standards for players seeking to play in Kenya, but these plans were only partially enforced.

If approved by the relevant bodies, the new quota will take effect from the upcoming seasons and is expected to reshape the transfer dynamics in the league.

In the just-concluded transfer window, top-flight clubs including Kenya Police, Gor Mahia, and AFC Leopards were among the teams that signed foreign players to strengthen their squads.
