Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have received a significant and timely boost in their drive to revitalise Kenyan football following the lifting of financial restrictions on development funding by the world football governing body, FIFA.

The decision marks a pivotal milestone in FKF’s ongoing reform efforts, ending a prolonged period of constrained resources that has challenged the federation’s operations and ambitions.

In a letter dated Monday, 15 December 2025, FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee (GACC) informed FKF General-Secretary Harold Ndege that, after a positive review of the federation’s progress under its agreed action plan and the results of the 2024 central audit, the committee had resolved to resume the standard release of development funds under the FIFA Forward Programme with immediate effect.

The decision came after the GACC meeting held on Monday, 8 December 2025, where improvements in FKF’s governance and financial management were noted.

While the development funding has now been restored, FIFA stipulated that FKF will remain under a monthly reporting mechanism on the use of these funds at least until the next GACC session scheduled in March 2026.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed welcomed FIFA’s decision, describing it as “a strong vote of confidence” in the federation’s strategic direction.

“Step by step, we are fixing Kenyan football by strengthening governance, improving financial management, and restoring credibility at all levels,” President Mohammed said in an official statement.

He further emphasised that the outcome reflects collective diligence, discipline, and adherence to compliance standards by the FKF leadership and secretariat.

The federation also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and pledged that all funds will be used exclusively to advance football development across the country.

The reinstated funding is expected to underwrite FKF’s core programmes, including grassroots development, infrastructure projects, capacity building, and the broader growth of football nationwide, areas that have struggled due to funding constraints in recent years.

The funding suspension traces back to November 2021, when the Government of Kenya dissolved the FKF’s elected leadership amid concerns of financial mismanagement, accountability deficits, and governance shortcomings.

A caretaker committee was appointed to oversee football affairs, a move FIFA viewed as government interference, a violation of its statutes requiring national associations to operate independently.

This intervention prompted FIFA to suspend FKF in February 2022, cutting off access not only to development funds but also to broader support mechanisms until compliance conditions were met.

Even after the suspension of the federation was lifted by FIFA in November 2022 following the reinstatement of its executive leadership, development funding remained withheld pending demonstrable governance reforms.

The federation’s coffers, already strained upon assuming office a year ago, have been under tight financial pressure, with outstanding debts and operational shortfalls hampering programmes across all levels of the sport.

With funding now restored, FKF stands at a critical juncture.

The renewed financial inflows under FIFA Forward will support initiatives designed to broaden the sport’s reach, enhance competitive pathways, and uplift youth and grassroots football across Kenya.

Yet, the accompanying oversight, in the form of monthly reporting and compliance monitoring, underscores the sustained commitment required to embed strong governance and financial integrity within Kenyan football’s administration.

FKF has pledged to uphold these standards as it works collaboratively with FIFA to ensure that the federation’s resources are judiciously managed for the long-term benefit of the game.
