Last season, Bidco got the better of Gor Mahia, handing them their first league loss of the season and securing a barren draw in the second leg.
The FKF Premier League Match Day One continues with a total of three matches scheduled for today, Sunday 21 September.
Record 21-time league champions Gor Mahia will begin the push to reclaim the league title with a season opener against Bidco United at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani from 1600 hrs.
Gor Mahia endured an underwhelming 2024/25 season, losing the league to Kenya Police FC and suffering a 2-1 loss to FKFPL newbies Nairobi United in the Mozzart Bet Cup.
K'Ogalo responded by firing the entire technical bench and hiring a new one headed by Ghanaian Charles Akonnor, who is now tasked with ensuring the club regains its glory.
Assistant coach Kobi Mensah revealed that K’Ogalo’s title push will entail beginning the season with three points against Bidco.
“To win the league is to win most of our matches. The plan and approach is to gather maximum points regardless of the opponent. That is what will give us the cutting edge to reclaim our lost glory,” said Mensah.
Mensah, who revealed that Harambee Stars defender Sylvester Owino will be out with an injury, decried inadequate preparation as they start the season but is confident they have what it takes to fry Bidco.
“The boys are looking sharp to get the season underway. While our preparations haven’t been perfect, they have been enough to set us up well. We’ve also studied Bidco in a couple of friendlies and have an idea of what to expect,” he added.
Last season, Bidco got the better of Gor Mahia, handing them their first league loss of the season and securing a barren draw in the second leg.
Bidco head coach Anthony Akhulia will be aiming to carry on with that form and secure three points as his side looks to avoid last season’s league ordeal that saw them secure their survival on the last day.
Shabana host newbies
At Gusii Stadium, Shabana will begin their season by hosting league newbies APS Bomet from 1400 hrs in what will be the first match of the day.
The Glamour Boys had a good 2024/25 season that saw them finish fifth on the log, an improvement from the 14th place they occupied in the previous season.
A major part of Shabana’s success last season was the fans, who cheered on the team and helped them turn Gusii Stadium into a fortress for visiting teams.
The Peter Okidi-coached side will be keen to replicate that this season as they now aim at challenging for the league title.
APS Bomet, on the other hand, managed to secure their maiden appearance in the top flight after finishing second in the National Super League.
The club, which also boasts a good number of fans, will be expecting them to make the short trip to Kisii to cheer and witness their maiden match in the top flight.
APS will also be encouraged by the fact that they did a double over Shabana when both competed in the 2021/22 NSL season.
Murang'a Seal vs Ulinzi Stars
The other match of the day will see Murang’a Seal play host to military side Ulinzi Stars at their St. Sebastian Park backyard from 1500 hrs.
Both Ulinzi and Seal endured a tough season in the league last season but fought hard to retain their league status, finishing 12th and 13th respectively.
However, both sides will be keen to avoid involvement in the relegation matrix, and that will start with securing victory in their first match.
Coach Dunstan Nyaudo will benefit from the services of some experienced players whom he recalled from military duty to bolster his team this season, while Seal will be hoping that interim coach Don Otieno will reap from his knowledge of the squad to guide them to a win.
Last season, both teams won a match apiece in the league against each other, while Seal eliminated the 2010 league champions from the Mozzart Bet Cup.
