Ahead of the match, Gor Mahia are at the summit of the league with 30 points, the same as their archrivals, AFC Leopards, with only a one-goal difference separating the two top sides.
Kakamega Homeboyz, Shabana, Police FC, and Tusker are third to sixth, respectively, all with 24 points and also separated by goal difference.
At the tail end of the table lie Kariobangi Sharks with 13 points, and they are joined in the relegation zone by Sofapaka and league newbies APS Bomet, all with 14 points.
2008 champions Mathare United are 13th on the log with 18 points, a place and a point more than their opponents, 2010 league champions Ulinzi Stars.
Mathare head into today's match on a bad run of form, having won only one of their last five league matches, drawing one, and tasting defeat three times, including in their last two matches.

The military side has not been impressive either and has the same record as the Slum Boys but will be encouraged that their win and draws have come in their last two matches.
With the two teams’ form this season more or less equal, both teams will be coming with the belief and confidence of securing maximum points in the match.
However, Mathare will be under pressure to capitalize on their home advantage and secure a win that will see them bring an end to their losing streak.
The Slum Boys will be encouraged by the fact that they picked four points from Ulinzi Stars last season: a barren draw in the first leg before Musa Masika’s 74th-minute strike guaranteed them a 1-0 victory in the second leg.
Mathare’s new signing, Isaac Omweri, had urged his teammates to get together and secure a win that would move them up the table.
“We all need to be psyched up for the match. At the moment, Ulinzi are largely our agemates, which will make it an interesting battle. I looked at the league table, and I was not happy with our position, and therefore we have to go to the match to win and improve our standings on the log,” he stated.
