In a statement released through its official channels, Nejmeh hailed the 32-year-old Kenya international as a seasoned midfielder with extensive experience across top leagues in Africa and Asia.
“From the powerful stadiums of South Africa to Japan’s J1 League, and through to the Iranian Pro League, today a new chapter begins with Star Sports Club. Let’s welcome our new midfielder, our player Teddy,” the club announced.
Akumu’s career spans over a decade and has taken him through a diverse football journey.
He began his professional career at Gor Mahia before moving to Sudan’s Al Khartoum, then made his mark at Zambia’s ZESCO United, South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs, Japan’s Sagan Tosu, and, most recently, Kheybar Khorramabad in Iran.
The lanky midfielder has also featured in several CAF inter-club campaigns, including appearances in the CAF Champions League.
Internationally, Akumu remains one of Kenya’s most experienced midfielders. Since making his debut for the Harambee Stars in 2011, he has been a consistent selection for national duty and was part of the squad during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Earlier this year, the veteran midfielder confirmed he would not be renewing his contract with Kheybar Khorramabad, citing a desire for a new challenge outside Iran.
While back in Nairobi, he maintained his fitness by training with the national team as he considered his next move.
His signing by Nejmeh marks the beginning of another chapter in a career defined by persistence, adaptability, and resilience.
Off the pitch, Akumu has also been deliberate about building his profile and exploring opportunities beyond football.
In September 2024, he signed with World Media Family’s Next-Generation Media Management Agency, which also represents former Newcastle United winger Gaël Kakuta and several other top professionals.
The agency has been managing his digital presence, producing motivational content and match-day media to enhance his brand.
For Nejmeh SC, Akumu’s arrival represents a significant reinforcement as the Lebanese giants aim to bolster their midfield ahead of a demanding season in both domestic and continental competitions.
Nejmeh will kick off their season on Friday, 19 September, hosting arch-rivals Al Ansar in what is expected to be a highly charged opener.
