When Enzo Maresca was sacked in January, nine players thanked him on social media networks

One of the indicators of one manager’s popularity is player’s tribute. It’s not the most important indicator but in the 21st century, social media are very important and when a coach is sacked, player’s tribute on their Instagram or FB accounts are always interesting things to look at. They can reveal if the coach was popular among the players or not, or at least it can indicate if some players favored the manager more then others. One full day after the sacking of Liam Rosenior, we are yet to see a single player’s tribute on social media.

When Chelsea decided to part ways with Enzo Maresca in January this season, no less than nine players decided to say goodbye to their boss and thank him for managing them. Filip Jorgensen, Levi Colwill, Pedro Neto, Moises Caicedo, Trevoh Chalobah, Liam Delap, Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez and Enzo Fernandez all paid tribute to the Italian and Fernandez led the group with the detailed post, full of gratitude. And while it was quite logical that the Argentinian midfielder didn’t post anything, considering that he was suspended for two games by Rosenior, the others surprisingly remained silent (for now).

One of the reasons for sacking the English manager was his lack of authority. Rosenior had a modest playing career and his coaching one was basically at the very beginning. Before taking command of such a big club like Chelsea, Rosenior had only an interim job at Derby County, Hull City and Strasbourg gigs in his resume. The players never looked at him like a man who can teach them something and when results went from bad to worse, he was unable to motivate them or give them much needed confidence.

He was also very critical of the players just before the sack, after the Brighton defeat.

I keep coming out and defending the players but that performance tonight is indefensible. The manner of the goals we conceded, the amount of duels that we lost, the lack of intensity in the team... something needs to change drastically here right now. I am accountable, I've always said that, but after tonight, I think the players as well need to have a look in the mirror for what they put in. You can talk about tactics, tactics come after the basics. I can't keep coming out here and defending some of the things that we are seeing. I can't come out and lie” he said then.
