Kenyan clubs may have missed out on the lucrative African Football League (AFL) tournament but local referees have not.
This is because three Kenyan referees will be in charge of today’s high-pitch African Football League (AFL) return match between Esperance and Wydad Casablanca.
Peter Waweru will be at the center assisted by veteran Gilbert Cheruiyot and another Kenyan Stephen Yembe.
Cheruiyot told Mozzart Sport at his hotel in Tunis that they are privileged to officiate the big match.
“It is a big tie and as Kenyans, we are proud to have been considered for this match,” he said.
This is not the first time Cheruiyot handling a match involving Esperance as he was here in May for a Confederation African Football (CAF) Champions League match.
The three of them have also been shortlisted to officiate at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast.
“We attended a pre-tournament training and hope to be included in the final list,” added Cheruiyot.

Thursday’s African Football League (AFL) match will decide who between Esperance and Wydad makes it to the final on November 11.
The Moroccan club won the first leg 1-0 and will be keen to maintain the score so as to play either Al-Ahly or Mamelodi Sundowns the other two teams in the semi-final as well.
