Despite enduring a rough patch in recent weeks, Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) head coach Charles Bruno has insisted his side remains firmly in contention for promotion to the FKF Premier League, expressing confidence that the team can still turn their campaign around in the final stretch of the National Super League (NSL) season.

MOFA’s promotion ambitions suffered another setback over the weekend after they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against fellow promotion hopefuls Migori Youth FC in a fiercely contested South Nyanza derby.

The loss came barely a week after the Michael Olunga-backed outfit squandered points in a pulsating 3-3 draw against FC Talanta, leaving the club with just a single point from their last two matches.

The disappointing run has further complicated the Homa Bay-based outfit's push for top-flight football, with inconsistency proving costly during the second leg of the campaign.

Having dropped five crucial points in consecutive outings, the side has now slipped to fifth place on the NSL standings with 57 points, eight behind third-placed Mombasa United, who currently occupy the final promotion slot.

With only six matches left before the curtain falls on the season, MOFA now faces an uphill task and can scarcely afford any further slip-ups if they are to keep their FKFPL dream alive.

Albeit the growing pressure and increasing doubts from sections of fans and observers, the tactician remains optimistic that his charges can mount a late resurgence and force their way back into the promotion conversation.

In an interview with Mozzart Sport, the soft-spoken coach maintained that the race is far from over, pointing out that 18 points are still up for grabs and revealing that being written off has only strengthened the team’s resolve heading into the decisive phase of the season.

“We are not yet out of the promotion race. We still have six matches and 18 points to fight for. Many people have already given up on us and written us off, which is fine, but we are going to use that as motivation and fuel for the final six matches of the campaign,” he said.

“It has been a challenging past two weekends for us, especially dropping five points, but we will dust ourselves off and begin preparing effectively for the final push over the weekend.

“I have an amazing group of players who have shown resilience and character. They have taught me how quickly life can change in football, and that is why I remain confident that this team can fight all the way to the end.” Bruno added.

MOFA’s remaining fixtures could, however, provide a lifeline in their quest for promotion.

The side is set to face relegation-threatened outfits Kisumu All Stars, Darajani Gogo and Kabati Youth, alongside encounters against Kibera Black Stars, Soy United and Gucha Stars.

The coming weeks are now shaping up to be defining moments for the club as they seek to secure a historic maiden promotion to the FKF Premier League at the second attempt.
