The forward earned KCB maximum points last weekend
The 2023/2024 FKF Premier League season couldn’t have started any better for former Golden Boot winner Derrick Otanga.
Proving himself the difference between his current station Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) FC and AFC Leopards over the weekend, the lethal forward came off the bench to stick late, dismissing Leopards 1-0 as the bankers started the new season with victory.
Coach Bernard Mwalala had preferred Francis Kahiro, Etyang Stephen and Harrison Mwendwa upfront when the match kicked off.
And when the trio had done their part in ensuring the Leopards defence had run out of legs in the closing stages, Otanga was thrown in to finish the job, and he did. He is elated with the start.
‘’It was all well planned, not to mention we generally played well the entire match. Of course, I am happy with my first goal of the season. Hopefully, many more are to follow,’’ he says.
Having been a banker before travelling abroad, the lanky forward won the 2021 Golden Boot with 16 goals. He wishes this could happen again this season, and for his team to go for it this time.
‘’I did win the Golden Boot but as a team we came very close to winning the league too. That would have been a nice feat for me and my teammates. God-willing we can achieve that. I know it’s early but if we continue putting in the work as we already are, nothing is impossible,’’ says the 26-year-old who has been capped once.
KCB have traditionally been known to have very rich depths within their squads at the start of every season and this seems to be no different.
National team goalkeeper Byrne Omondi and other already capped players like Nashon Alembi, assistant skipper Brian Ochieng, Masika Musa and Danson Chetambe prove just how spoilt for choice coach Mwalala will be this season.
After the international break where Kenya is set to play Qatar and South Sudan national teams, the bankers will resume league action against Kariobanki Sharks. KCB sit 6th on the log having played one less match compared to all of the top 5.
