United's maths: five-match unbeaten run quickly turns into three-game winless streak

If only my players would fight each other, laments Ruben Amorim following a 1-0 home loss to Everton

And then came November...

Ruben Amorim seemed to be flirting with sacking by the end of September, as Manchester United had recorded more defeats (3) than victories (2), playing the same game week after week, regardless of the opponent. However, a do-or-die clash against Sunderland on October 4 took us all by surprise, as the Red Devils routinely annihilated the Black Cats to kickstart a run of three consecutive victories, including the most statement one - against Liverpool at Anfield.

Deservedly, the Portuguese tactician was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month.

Alas, instead of using that momentum created in October to build something truly worth praise and support, Amorim's men fell into another hole of mediocre performances. To say the least...

November started with two strange 2-2 draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, genuine rollercoasters which followed the exact pattern - United would break the deadlock before conceding two only to rescue themselves very late.

Those two ties revealed many old and a couple of new flaws of the squad that failed to take advantage of the fact that Man Utd are the only 'big name' in the EPL not playing in Europe this season. It means they only have "a privilege" of resting and preparing for an entire week between their two Premier League games, unlike Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Well, last night's home defeat to ten-man Everton proved one thing for sure - Ruben Amorim is incapable of using that time to prepare the team properly.

Who is to blame for that, only him or...? Probably not. Some players are still struggling to adapt to United's style - whatever that is, you might say, at the moment - and a couple of injuries didn't help either. Still, the fact is that their five-game run without a loss has quickly transformed into a three-game winless streak. More importantly, the lack of a clear idea, along with a fainthearted display, should worry all United fans around the world.

"Frustration, disappointment," Amorim said after the match, United's first EPL home loss after seeing the opposition pick up a red card, winning 36 and drawing 10 of the previous 46.

"They were the better team. We deserved to lose. Twenty minutes in the game, red card for the opponent. We need to win this game no matter what."

After this game, Manchester United sit 10th in the table, in the middle of a group of four clubs including Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool.

"I know which point we are in. I have that feeling during this run. I always talk about that.

"We are not there, not even near the point we should be to fight for the best positions in the league.

"We have a lot to do and we need to be perfect to win games. We were not perfect today."

Amorim even agreed with his Toffees counterpart David Moyes in saying he felt the Gueye-Keane spat showed a welcome sign of desire. It is a sight he wants to see from his own team.

"Fighting is not a bad thing," he said. "Fighting doesn't mean that they don't like each other.

"Fighting is when you lose the ball and 'I will fight you because we will suffer a goal'.

"I hope my players, when they lose the ball, fight each other."
