Weakened Spurs easy prey for the soaring Magpies

Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 04.01.25. | 17:41

All three goals were scored before the break, as Spurs took the lead, but failed to defend it. Newcastle's "golden duo," Gordon and Isak ultimately brought a vital win to Howe's team - 2-1

Ange Postecoglou's "kindergarten" failed to note a win. Tottenham's squad was "massacred" by injuries, while the Australian surprisingly left Son and Maddison on the bench, relying on Werner and Johnson, and it brought him little good.

Although Spurs took the lead after only four minutes over Solanke, Newcastle levelled already after six, following a rather controversial situation that preceded Gordon's equalizer. Seven minutes before the break, Isak completely turned tables, scoring the last goal of the game - 2-1.

Spurs boss tried to change his team's fortunes with subs but giving only 30 minutes to Maddison, and Son was not sufficient for a more significant impact. Instead, Tottenham suffered their third defeat in the last four games and Postecoglou's position is now seriously jeopardized.

People in the stands barely found their seats and bought drinks, and the scoreboard was already showing 1-1! The injury-hit Spurs, which today were without Rodrigo Bentancur, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, and Micky van de Ven, among others, surprisingly took the lead after only four minutes thanks to Dominic Solanke, who headed home Pedro Porro's perfect cross.

Nevertheless, the home team's joy lasted just two minutes, as Anthony Gordon equalized in the sixth minute! Truth be told, Joelinton pretty evidently handballed at the beginning of Newcastle's action, but VAR still confirmed the goal stood.

Even though a more peaceful phase of the game followed, the visitors threatened several times over Gordon and Alexander Isak. However, the Magpies had to wait until the 38th minute to turn the result over. Spurs lost the ball in their half, Jacob Murphy got it on the right flank and found Isak inside, who easily passed the ball into the net, making it 2-1.

Practically for the first time after Solanke's opener, Tottenham created a chance in the 55th minute when Martin Dubravka deflected Pape Matar Sarr's long-range effort, and Brennan Johnson hit the post from a rebound. Gordon had a decent attempt on the other side minutes later but sent it far over the bar.

At an hour mark, Ange Postecoglou felt he needed to activate his "heavy machinery," subbing in Son Heung-min and James Maddison - the duo which was benched for some reason - for Timo Werner and Lucas Bergvall.

The two started making an impact only after 20 minutes, creating a few fair opportunities. The Magpies' boss, Eddie Howe, opted for an all-out-defence tactic in the last ten minutes, taking his only forward, Isak, off the pitch. Luckily for the Englishman, his boys managed to defend the lead and note a vital triumph which nears them to the TOP 4, while Spurs remain 11th.
