Shabana returned to the top flight after 17 years in the cold

Former AFC Leopards captain Eugene Mukangula has explained why he turned down offers from other clubs for Shabana.

Mukangula caught many by surprise after he was unveiled as one of the new Shabana recruits on Friday evening, ending speculations on his next move after leaving Leopards.

The creative midfielder left the den last month alongside his assistant Peter Thiongo, who has since joined Posta Rangers.

The two were demoted towards the end of last season for what the club termed as failed leadership following the reported go slows start to their clash against the relegated Vihiga Bullets.

Given the performances Mukangula put in while in the Leopards shirt in the years he served the club, he was widely expected to join one of the big guns in the league.

However, he chose to settle at Shabana, an outfit that returned to the top flight after seventeen years in the cold.

The Glamour Boys gained automatic promotion to the top tier after winning the National Super League last season. They were promoted alongside Murang’a Seal.

There were approaches from other clubs, but I reached an agreement with Shabana. They explained to me their targets and the project they have for the long run, which was attractive,” said the midfielder, who penned a year-long deal.

Shabana kicked off the season on the wrong footing as the Sammy Okoth-coached side lost 1-0 to Murang’a Seal before coming from behind to hold FC Talanta to a 1-1 draw in the subsequent match.

Mukangula, who is set to start training with the club next week, expressed confidence that the team will turn its fortunes around before it's too late.

Shabana means business, by the way. I am sure the team will recover and post good results,” he said.

Mukangula, joined Leopards in 2018 from the defunct Thika United.
