The team, popularly known as the Deejayz, endured one of their worst runs in 2024, going on a 16-match winless streak and registering just a single draw before their relegation was sealed.
Their last Kenya Cup victory dates back to January 2023, when they beat Mean Machine 31-7.
The campaign ended in heartbreak after they were deducted points for giving a walkover to Mwamba RFC in week 10, leaving them with zero points on the log.
But after months of disappointment, the Nairobi-based side is now showing signs of revival through the National 7s Circuit.
Over the weekend, Homeboyz announced their return to competitive rugby with a triumphant run at the Embu 7s, lifting the Division Two title after a tense 7-0 win over NYS Spades in the final.
The victory secured their place in Division One of the upcoming Kabeberi 7s.
In an exclusive with Mozzart Sport, acting coach Martin Nyamoi praised his charges for their resilience despite financial struggles and the mass exodus of key players.
“It is good to be back. The boys are happy. The sacrifices that the players make are what motivate us. They are not willing to give up, however bad the going is.
That is our main source of motivation. They had it all coming to Embu: the power, the resilience, the courage to come. That was what propelled them to win the Division 2 category,” Nyamoi explained.
The former Homeboyz RFC player further emphasized that the current squad represents the future of both their 7s and 15s campaigns, noting that rebuilding the systems is key to restoring their brand.
“We are rebuilding the team and working to make Homeboyz better. In the next one or two years, we will be the Homeboyz that people knew,” he added.
Their return to Division One will not be a walk in the park.
For the Kabeberi 7s, they are pooled in Group C and will face stiff competition from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), fresh from a historic semifinal run at Embu; Catholic Monks, who will be eager to bounce back after a disappointing outing; and Daystar Falcons, who will be looking to sharpen their attack at this higher level.
The team was founded in 2009 by Paul Murunga, who also doubled as player-coach, with the club’s initial goal being to provide a platform for budding players to showcase their talent.
Homeboyz rose quickly, earning Kenya Cup promotion in 2011 after back-to-back Eric Shirley Shield wins.
The club has enjoyed notable highs, including reaching the 2015 Enterprise Cup final, winning the trophy in 2018 against Impala RFC, and finishing top of the Kenya Cup standings in the 2016/17 season.
However, their golden run was repeatedly cut short by Kabras RFC in the semifinals of both the 2017 and 2018 campaigns.
Though the recent past has been brutal, Nyamoi believes the Embu 7s victory could mark the beginning of a new chapter.
