Shujaa star Billy 'The Kid' retires

He was also part of the Shujaa team that lost its core status in the World Rugby Sevens Series in May

Kenyan rugby star Billy Odhiambo has announced his retirement from the sport as he marks his 30th birthday.

Odhiambo, who until early this year was still part of the Shujaa set-up, was part of the Kenya team that won the first and only Cup trophy on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in 2016, when Kenya stunned Fiji in the final.

Sadly, he was also part of the Shujaa team that lost its core status in the World Rugby Sevens Series in May. His last World Rugby Sevens Series game was the game against Canada that sealed Kenya’s fate.

The winger has now taken to social media to announce his exit from the game altogether. He played for the Kenya Sevens for over a decade.

“As I mark my 30th birthday and cross over to a new decade, I want to take this chance to announce my retirement from the sport that I love so much. God has been so good to me ever since I donned that shirt for the first time in 2012 at Port Elizabeth, up until the last time in London this year. 11 good years of God's grace and favor,” read the player’s Instagram post.


He went on to thank his family for the support that they accorded him during his professional rugby career, which saw him turn out for

“To my loving parents who have supported me throughout this whole journey, I can't thank you enough. My siblings, Awuor, who was also my manager, Tim, and Fiona, I thank you for always being in my corner. My wife ZamZam and my sons Zafar and Zaheem, who have been my rock, you were part of my 'why', I thank you, and I love you".

He had kind words for all the people he interacted with through rugby.

“All my coaches, management, mentors, teammates, and even opponents who have been part of my journey, I thank you for believing in me and making me a better man”.

“To you, the fans who have stood by me and held me accountable throughout this journey, I thank you and I love you all. I am excited to see what the future holds. Billy' The Kid' Odhiambo out”.

At club level, the Maseno High School alumnus played for Strathmore Leos and Mwamba.
