In football, few moments are as painful or as unforgettable as turning the ball into the back of your own net. One misplaced touch, one unlucky deflection, and suddenly the roar of the crowd celebrates your misfortune, or your own fans suddenly jeer you.

Own goals are rare, yet they leave a mark, blending skill, luck, and misfortune in the cruellest of ways.

This FKF Premier League season has seen a noticeable rise in own goals. Just this past weekend, three strikes found the wrong net across four matches, including two in the thrilling 3-3 draw between Kakamega Homeboyz and Mara Sugar FC at Bukhungu Stadium.

Mozzart Sport takes a closer look at every own goal so far this season and the players who have had the misfortune of netting an own goal. After 19 rounds of the FKF Premier League, a total of 17 own goals have been scored.

At the top of the chart are Kakamega Homeboyz and APS Bomet, each with three own goals. Both clubs have had two players score braces in their own nets.

For Homeboyz, Eugene Ochieng, who has since left the club, has two to his name, while Glen Otunga scored the third.

For APS Bomet, Joseph Masibo has two own goals, while Anthony Naibei contributed one.

Just below them are Mathare United, Shabana FC, and defending champions Kenya Police FC, each with two own goals. Mathare’s misfortunes came through goalkeeper Kevin Ouru and midfielder Peter Oudu, who has since left the club.

Shabana’s tally was marked by James Mazembe and Justus Munika. Kenya Police FC’s own goals were scored by new signing Jacques Bowamba and captain David Ochieng.

Several other clubs have conceded once in misfortune. Nairobi United, Mara Sugar FC, KCB FC, Tusker FC, and Bidco United have each recorded one own goal.

Michael Karamor was responsible for Nairobi United’s own goal, while Nassor Shikokoti found the wrong net for Mara Sugar. KCB’s Victor Okello, Tusker’s Collins Odhiambo, and Bidco United’s Kevin Ouma, who has since returned to Kenya Police FC, also scored against their own teams.

As the season progresses, these moments serve as a harsh reminder that in football, one split-second error can leave a lasting mark, and no player is immune to the cruel twist of fate that is an own goal.
