However, Fortune Sacco had other ideas as they produced a spirited display to hand the league leaders a costly setback.
In-form forward Collins Mwangi once again proved decisive for the Kirinyaga-based side, netting the solitary goal of the match to seal a vital victory for the microfinance-backed outfit.
The win marked an immediate response for coach Vincent Nyaberi’s charges following last weekend’s disappointing defeat in the Majirani Derby.
The crucial triumph pushed Fortune Sacco to 57 points, keeping their promotion ambitions alive despite remaining 11 points behind joint leaders Mombasa United, Migori Youth and 3K FC, who are all tied on 68 points.
For Migori Youth, the defeat could not have come at a worse time.
The loss saw them surrender the outright lead at the top and opened the door for both Mombasa United and 3K FC to level on points, setting the stage for a tense and dramatic title run-in with only a handful of matches remaining.
Meanwhile, at Mombasa Sports Club, Mombasa United bounced back strongly from last weekend’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to FC Talanta by edging Nairobi City Stars 2-1 in a crucial encounter.
Forward Dennis Mabea was the hero for the coastal side, scoring a quick-fire brace inside the opening 25 minutes to inspire Mombasa United to maximum points in a must-win fixture.
The win which marked coach Peter Okidi's maiden victory since taking charge, lifted Mombasa United back to the summit alongside Migori Youth and 3K FC on 68 points, intensifying the battle for automatic promotion spots.
For Nairobi City Stars, the defeat extended their miserable run to four consecutive losses.
The Kawangware-based outfit dropped to 13th place on 37 points and now find themselves increasingly dragged into the relegation fight.
Elsewhere at Mashuuru Complex, Equity FC suffered a major blow to their promotion push after being held to a barren draw by Kisumu All Stars.
The stalemate denied the Bankers an opportunity to close the gap on the top three.
Victory would have taken Equity to 66 points, just two behind the joint leaders. Instead, they remain five points adrift, although their hopes of securing promotion in their maiden NSL campaign remain firmly alive.
The valuable away point for Kisumu All Stars lifted them to 32 points and slightly boosted their survival hopes as the relegation battle continues to intensify.
At Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu, Vihiga United continued their resurgence under returning head coach Gilbert Selebwa with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Soy United.
The result marked back-to-back wins for Selebwa since his return to the club, having also guided Vihiga to a 1-0 victory over Nairobi City Stars last weekend.
The win lifted Vihiga off the bottom of the table to 26 points, leaving them just three points away from climbing out of the relegation zone and significantly reviving their survival hopes.
Soy United, on the other hand, suffered their 13th defeat of the season and slipped to 10th place on 44 points, denting their hopes of securing a respectable top-half finish.
At Ndalani Complex, Mully Children’s Family boosted their fight against relegation after edging Nzoia Sugar 1-0 in another crucial fixture at the bottom end of the table.
The victory moved Francis Chege’s side to 27 points, leaving them just two points shy of escaping the drop zone with five matches still left to play.
The defeat extended Charles Odera’s side’s winless run to four matches, further damaging their hopes of finishing inside the top ten.
In another relegation battle showdown at Mumboha grounds, Luanda Villa enhanced their survival prospects with a convincing 2-0 victory over Mwatate United.
The win lifted Luanda Villa to 39 points, opening an 11-point cushion above the relegation zone.
For Mwatate United, however, the defeat extended their winless streak to four matches and left them rooted at the bottom of the standings with their survival hopes hanging by a thread.
The final match of the day saw FC Talanta continue their fine form with a second consecutive 3-0 victory, comfortably dispatching Kabati Youth.
The emphatic win strengthened Talanta’s push for a top-five finish, while Kabati Youth’s struggles deepened further as they extended their winless run to seven matches and edged dangerously closer to the relegation zone.
