The former Harambee Stars captain, who recently retired from professional football, says a return to Glasgow, Scotland, in a technical role would be a fitting next step as he prepares for life on the touchline.
Wanyama spent three highly successful years at Celtic, where he became a hugely popular figure among supporters and has often described the club as the place where he felt most appreciated.
“I hope one day I can start with Scotland at Celtic. I hope one day I can get that opportunity. It would be good,” Wanyama said in an interview with Citizen TV.
Celtic holds a special place in his career, with Wanyama rising to prominence there and playing a key role during a dominant period that included back-to-back league titles. His performances quickly made him a fan favourite and cemented his reputation as one of the club’s standout midfielders.
Wanyama’s football journey began at JMJ Academy in Kenya, followed by early appearances for Nairobi City Stars and AFC Leopards.
He then moved to Europe with Helsingborgs IF in Sweden and Beerschot in Belgium before earning his breakthrough move to Celtic.
From there, he went on to Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League, later joining CF Montréal in Canada before ending his playing career at Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland.
Even before retiring, Wanyama had already started preparing for coaching, working through his UEFA licensing pathway.
“I have done my UEFA ‘B’, and next month I have exams for UEFA ‘A’ License,” he said. “It’s important to stay involved in football and prepare for the future.”
Throughout his career, Wanyama worked under several high-profile managers, including Neil Lennon, Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman, José Mourinho, Thierry Henry, Hernán Losada, and Laurent Courtois. However, the coach who left the biggest impression on him was Wilfried Nancy.
“I have seen him grow as a coach, and he really taught me a lot,” Wanyama said. “I was learning from him. I saw I can also learn and make my own history, like what he has done for that club.”
Nancy, who managed CF Montréal between 2021 and 2022, led the club to the Canadian Championship and an impressive MLS playoff run, leaving a lasting influence on Wanyama as he begins shaping his coaching ambitions.
